Materials: Whole-cloth cotton sensitized with cyanotype chemicals, six-strand cotton embroidery thread, Dual Duty thread, cotton felt backing

 Techniques: Sun-printing of photograms (actual object printing), hand embroidery, also hand embroidery as quilting; backing machine stitched to edges in pillowcase style, one edge stitched by hand to close

 Think of underwater sea grasses and tiny transparent invertebrates called “salps” (subphylum Tunicata) circling and spiraling in concert.  Scientists have recently determined that salps play a major role in carbon sequestration, a crucial process in the battle against global warming.  Surface Current refers to our oceans at risk, a calamitous situation that can be seen as a metaphor for contemporary society. The use of rope to create the sea grasses is symbolic. Our planet is “on the ropes” as a result of irreversible climate change.
