Past Present: Out of the Blue
35 x 51.5 in.
Materials: Cyanotype chemicals overall on vintage strip-pieced quilt top consisting of cotton fabrics and cotton blends, cotton floss embroidery thread, Dual Duty thread to attach polyester/cotton binding, polyester batting.
Techniques: Cyanotype photograms of rope, hand embroidery as quilting, binding hand stitched to back.
Statement: “Out of the Blue” refers to the process used here, Prussian blue cyanotype, with serendipitous patterns resulting from cotton blends resisting the photographic chemicals. With the rope, I drew my interpretation of swooping, expansive music in Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” My Past Present series incorporates traditional vintage quilt blocks and tops assembled by anonymous makers, creating contemporary statements.
